EDITORIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Up to now Acta Veterinaria Hungarica has published scientific papers from all fields of veterinary science and medicine. Thanks to our authors, we keep receiving an extremely large number of manuscripts to be considered for publication. Unfortunately, however, the limited volume size of the journal cannot be expanded further.

As an attempt to resolve the above-mentioned conflict, the Editorial Board has reviewed the number of citations received (in a five-year period after the date of publication) to papers published from the different disciplines of veterinary science. The number of citations reflects the level of interest that our readers take in papers from the individual disciplines.

The analysis of citations has demonstrated that papers on veterinary physiology (including physiological chemistry, nutritional physiology and pathophysiology), virology, bacteriology, infectious diseases, parasitology, pathology, clinical veterinary medicine (including diagnostic imaging and surgery) and reproduction elicit the greatest interest. The modest interest taken in papers from other fields of veterinary science as shown by the number of citations does not mean that these papers are of lower quality but indicates that the readers tend to look for interesting articles from these fields in other, more specialised journals.

The least interest has been shown for papers presenting results of exclusively local importance, indicating that such articles should preferably be published in local journals.

After careful review of our present state and the possible steps we could and should take, the Editorial Board of Acta Veterinaria Hungarica has decided to streamline the profile of the journal to papers that are especially interesting for our readers. This change is in line with the interests of authors submitting manuscripts from the above-listed fields, as it will hopefully shorten the publication process.

For the above reasons, from 1 January 2008 our Editorial Board will only consider for publication manuscripts that present new and original research results and reviews in the above-listed fields, and will decide on their acceptance on the basis of peer review.

We believe that this decision is in the best interest of our past and future authors who will benefit from the advantages of timely publication and higher citation.

Budapest, 15 October 2007

On behalf of the Editorial Board
